FYI

The Travel Channel is teaching me that "Technology makes owning an island both feasible and practical."

It's an emotional decision to buy an island.

Apparently you buy your own island, hire people to build houses, and then charge ridiculous sums of money to to stay/live there: $45,000/night with a 3 night minimum stay.

Sounds about right. The kinds of houses you're looking at are, however, in the million+ dollar range.

Hmmm....

....see, now I'm curious about whether or not *I* can do that. Cordon off part of the island for admin, part for personal use, build a house that my friends can live in when they come visit...

I had breakfast next to my uncle (who is a millionaire) and he tried to talk to me about this dilapidated hotel on Lake Michigan he was going to turn into a resort for rich Chicago residents. Including buying a yacht for use by guests.

If you build it, they will spend. The rich that is. Apparently there is big money in real estate. So, after you get that MBA...

...I'll totally talk to your uncle about getting some experience managing a project like that :).

When Mike and I were on the whale watching tour in San Juan, the guide said that a guy paid a million dollars for *that* island (pointing) and then they found that there was an eagle nesting on it. Since eagles are protected for a certain radius from the nest, and since the island was so small, the entire island could not be built on. Also eagles apparently always nest in the same place, so they will never go away. So I guess the practicality of owning an island doesn't always work out...
