Cookbook I love: Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker by Robin Robertson. Today I am making "Balsamic-Braised Root Vegetables," and I'm not sure I've ever eaten a turnip before. Everything in this cookbook looks good, even the stuff that I normally wouldn't eat much of, like mushrooms.

Mike's abhorrence of mushrooms is why I have so little luck with vegetarian cookbooks. They seem obsessed with fungi.

17 out of the 200 recipes in this book have mushrooms in them, so it's not too bad. There is a lot of use of crushed and/or diced tomatoes, though.

You can do what I do and try to substitute something else for mushrooms, like carrots or veggie crumbles or whatever strikes your fancy.
